Centella asiatica or Gotu Kola also known as Mandookaparni is a herb used for thousands of years by the practitioners of Ayurveda for improving memory, attention, concentration and as brain tonic. This quality of Centella asiatica has been appreciated in the classical texts of Ayurveda by giving it the status of ‘Medhya Rasayan’ meaning a herb which replenishes and revitalises the intellect, attention, concentration and analysing capacity of our mind.
A research study published in the journal Phytomedicine ( Oct 2000) found that Gotu Kola helps to revitalize brain, the nervous system and increases attention span and concentration. The nootropic effects of Gotu Kola help to improve many of the brains higher cognitive functions. And this quality of the herb makes it an ideal herbal supplement for children with AD/HD.
In my three years of clinical and pharmacological research on Centella asiatica in children with Ad/HD, it was found that the herb significantly improved attention and concentration in children with AD/HD. This herb has a soothing effect on the brain and hence improves sleep and to some degree helps in reducing hyperactivity.
For best results the powder of the whole plant should be preferred over extract. Clarified butter or ghee should be taken along with this medicine to get optimum benefits.
Centella asiatica is also used traditionally for wound healing , in the treatment of leprosy and is also a well know as an anti-aging herb.
