Five Simple Ayurveda Herbal Remedies for Cold and Flu

1. For itchy, sore throat with cough

 1 tsp pure honey
 1 tsp lime juice
 1/2 tsp organic ginger juice
Mix all of three well and give three to four times in a day. Best results if licked slowly with a finger and swirling it well in the mouth before swallowing. Do not drink water for at least ten minutes after taking this mixture.

  2. For sore throat, mild fever, body ache, chest congestion and cough with sputum. 

 1 tsp fenugreek seeds powdered
 1 tsp dried ginger powder
 1 /4 th tsp black pepper powder
 1/4th tsp cardamom powder
 1/4th tsp cinnamon powder
 2 tsp candy sugar powdered

 Mix all the above and add honey to this powder to make paste and then lick slowly by swirling it well around the mouth. Do not drink water for at least ten minutes after taking this mixture and repeat three to four times in a day for three days.

 3. For sore throat with hoarseness of voice and chest congestion

 Drink a tall glass of warm milk (milk should be brought to boil before using for best results) with a pinch of turmeric, a pinch of dried ginger powder and tsp of powdered candy sugar. Milk in this case is best taken before bedtime. Although, for people who are healthy, milk should never be taken after food and after sunset! 

 4. An herbal tea for cold and flu 

 1 cup boiled and cooled water
 1 tablespoon Tulsi Leaves ( Indian basil)
 1/2 inch of fresh ginger grated or made into a paste
 1 stem of Lemongrass pounded with a pestle
 2-3 black peppercorns or 1/2 tsp of black pepper powder
 1 tsp fenugreek seeds
 2 tsp of jaggery or brown sugar
Boil on low heat in a copper or cast iron pot and reduce to half. Drink warm tea five to six times in a day. For best results prepare fresh tea for each use. 

5. Diet is very important for our body to heal faster. When suffering from cold, flu and similar problems, avoid eating cold items like ice cream, fried food, food added with artificial colors and flavours, pre cooked refrigerated food, bananas, citrus foods etc. 

Moong daal soup (‘Yoosh’ in sanskrit) which is an Ayurveda recipe is best taken in this condition.

 1 cup yellow moong daal
 10 cups of water
 1/2 cup red onion chopped finely
 1 tsp cummin seeds
 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
 1 tsp turmeric powder
 1 tsp black pepper powder
 1 tsp salt
 1 tsp vegetable oil
 2 tsp fresh cilantro chopped
 In daal in a cast iron pot and rinse it well with water.Drain the water well and then add ten cups of water and let it stand for fifteen to twenty minutes. Then bring it to a boil on medium heat, stirring occasionally. Skim off the foam on top and then add turmeric and black pepper powder. Stir well and then cover the pot with a lid partially and cook on low heat for thirty minutes. Check the daal by pressing it with a spoon. If the daal gets mashed easily, it has been cooked well.
 In a small skillet heat up the oil. Add cumin , onion and ginger and fry till onions turn golden brown. Then add this to the cooked daal, add salt and bring it to a boil. Add chopped cilantro and serve.
This soup can be taken till the symptoms reduce and it also an excellent recipe for those with fever and liver disorders.
